Franklin sophomore Keylo Lee will remember his first varsity start Friday night at Hillsboro.
And it’s not because he scored a touchdown — on a 4-yard run.
No, it’ll be because it came on the final play of a season opener that ended in a 14-14 tie that was called because of lightning.
“It felt good getting out there and even better scoring,” Lee said. “But I didn’t think the game would end like this.
Team officials from both schools decided not to complete the non-region game after officials called the game with 7:31 left.
Lee’s TD capped a 99-yard drive and came after Hillsboro was stopped four straight plays inside the Franklin 5.
“I don’t think I would have decided to kick a field goal even if I had it to do over,” Hillsboro Coach Scott Blade said.
“The bottom line is we’ve been inside for much of the last three weeks.”
Hillsboro recovered fumbles to end the Rebels’ first two offensive possessions of the second half. Jacquese Seward scored on an 11-yard run three plays after the turnover to give Hillsboro a 14-7 lead with 6:42 left in the third quarter.
The second recovery ended at the goal line to set up the tying score.
Hillsboro quarterback Matt Arent capped the Burros’ second offensive series with a 19-yard touchdown pass to Demetrius Garrett for a 7-0 lead with 1:21 remaining in the first quarter.
The Rebels answered with an 80-yard drive that ate up nearly four minutes. Graham Nichols’ 21-yard completion to tight end Matt Worley moved the ball to the Hillsboro 10-yard line. Casey Dykes’ 3-yard run into the end zone tied the game three plays later.
The Burros had an opportunity with 3:21 left in the first half after their defense forced a three-and-out and gave the offense the ball at Franklin’s 32.
However, Franklin’s pressure flustered Arent. Rebel defenders Cole Nathan and J.D. Jervis teamed up to sack Arent to force a third-and-18. Franklin’s defense then forced Arent to throw the ball out of bounds after he was forced out of the pocket.
“We tried to pressure them with blitzes,” Franklin Coach Craig Clayton said. “Everybody talks about how fast we are, but they are faster. We had to try to offset that speed.”
