FRANKLIN — Michael Becker found a way after Bo Gilroy made a play.
Becker threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Michael Nash on third and goal with 4:41 left, giving Ravenwood a 10-7 win over Franklin in front of an overflow crowd Friday night.
Becker was flushed out of the right side of the pocket when he found Nash in the right corner of the end zone.
“I saw the corners come up, so I just dumped it to him,” Becker said. “We might not have the most talent, but we showed the most heart.”
Franklin’s defense stymied Ravenwood (1-2, 1-0 Region 6-5A) for most of the night. Gilroy, however, intercepted a pass by Graham Nichols and returned it to the Rebels 5 three plays before Becker’s touchdown pass to Nash.
“Coach told us we needed a big play, and I was proud I could help out,” said Gilroy, an outside linebacker. “I read the quarterback. The receiver was running a slant, and I came in and picked it up.”
More from Gilroy
Gilroy made another interception on Franklin’s next possession, but the Rebels (0-2, 0-1) almost sent the game into overtime when Tim Donegan’s 44-yard field goal barely missed wide left with 44 seconds left.
“We were just pitiful at responding to adversity in our first two games, but tonight we did it time in and time out,” Raptors Coach Brian Rector said.
Franklin’s offense continued to struggle as it was held to fewer than 15 points for the third consecutive game.
“I don’t know what’s messed up our offense the last two or three weeks,” Rebels Coach Craig Clayton said. “We went through the preseason against some good teams and scored a lot of points. From the second half of McCallie to now, we just stink.”
