FRANKLIN EARNS FIRST WIN

FRANKLIN — In a battle of two teams that were winless on the year, the Franklin Rebels celebrated Homecoming by picking up their first victory of the year, 35-14 over McGavock.

Franklin (1-2) had struggled to find the end zone the last few games, so Coach Craig Clayton decided to scale down the offense and get back to what he knows best.

The Rebels’ backfield duo of Anthony Steele and Kilo Lee were happy to hear that, scoring two touchdowns each while Ramsey Sellers had the other on a quarterback sneak.

“We knew that we would have to get our offense going and that starts with our running game,” Clayton said.

Ground game effective

Lee, a sophomore, opened the game with a 75-yard touchdown run and added another score from five yards out. He finished the night with 11 carries for 142 yards.

“We just love to run the ball,” Lee said. “We needed that win, bad. We can’t lose any more games.”

Steele put the Rebels up 21-0 on a five-yard scamper for his second touchdown. The score was set up by a pitch-and-catch from quarterback Graham Nichols to tight end Matt Worley for a 42-yard gain.

McGavock (0-3) got on the board with 3:27 left in the third quarter when Chris Maloney found Zach Franklin on a deep route for a 57-yard touchdown.

Aside from that one big play, the Franklin defense continued its dominance as McGavock struggled to find any real running room and rarely saw the Franklin side of the field.

“Our defense gave us great field position all night,” Clayton said. “We played a lot more intense tonight.”
